Our next two books are Number the Stars and Journey to Topaz.
Reading Standard 9: Compare and Contrast stories in the same genre- realistic fiction, on their approaches to similar themes and topics. We are going to read Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry and then Journey to Topaz by Yoshiko Uchida. Both books tell the story of a young girl and her family during the Second World War. When we finish reading, we will ask you to compare and contrast their experience in writing. It will be helpful to keep a log of major events, and experiences- as well as evidence from the text that will assist you in your compare and contrast essay assignment. Other Requirements
Example of a Reading Question Response: In the book, Anything but Typical, Jason, the main character, has trouble using another computer. Jason feels most safe using his usual computer. Jason says, “But I can’t use that computer...I can’t. My breathing is too loud inside my ears” (Baskin 7). Jason’s breathing increases, which shows that he is feeling scared about not being able to use his usual computer. He is having a physical and emotional reaction, which shows just how uncomfortable just the thought of using another computer can be for him. Another example of his need for the safety of the computer is “A hundred little pieces threaten to come apart” (Baskin 8). He feels that without the use of the specific computer he cannot feel safe and will no longer be able to control himself. The consistency of having the same computer everyday helps him remain calm and emotionally regulated. In conclusion, Jason needs to use the same computer every time he is in the library to feel safe. Anything But Typical is the first book that we will be reading in 5th grade. The homework assignments are in this post. |
